Iceland is the perfect destination for families with kids – children love the freedom and space, and for the parent´s ease, Iceland is one of the safest country in the world, with low crime rates and a very security system.
Hiking and trekking for all levels is very popular in remote areas and less remote. The highlands of Iceland are only possible to drive to from mid June until September, and many choose to drive across Iceland over the highlands on a big jeep. Road is not comfortable at all and not all rivers are bridged, but this is a great fun and unforgettable experience for couple of days. It is even possible to travel on horseback for few days in Iceland.
Glacier hike and ice climbing is all year´s activity but visit to natural ice caves in the glacier is only possible in winter.
For skiers, there is cross country or mountain skiing – and fantastic heli skiing from March – Iceland is one of few countries in the world where you can ski from mountain down to sea.
The new and ambitious activities inside the volcano (summer only) and into the glacier (all year) have been a huge attraction since they opened few years ago – these places are unique in the world.
Then are the more ordinary activities like whale, puffing or seal watching, horse back riding or dog-sledding , AVT squad driving, snowmobile tours, kayak or zodiac boat tour on the glacier lagoon, lava cave exploration – and more challenging activities like river rafting, snorkeling or scuba diving, surfing in the Atlantic Ocean, rock climbing, salmon fishing or sea angling, play golf in the midnight sun – and last but not least is to enjoy the number of geothermal bathing sites around the island – the Blue Lagoon being the most famous.
What children especially love is to stay couple of nights at a typical Icelandic farm, but you still have a choice of many old fashioned small farms with cows, sheep, hen and horses, where children can help out taking care of the animals.
